VCI Technical Information

Kite Packaging's wide range of Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting (VCI) packaging is ideal for protecting your products from corrosion and rust. Protective packaging including bubble wrap, pallet wrap, polythene bags and paper rolls that are all treated with corrosion inhibiting chemicals.

What causes corrosion of metal parts?

This range of products solves any corrosion issues that exist when packing, storing or transporting metal parts. Corrosion mainly occurs when atmospheric moisture settles onto the surface of metals. This layer of moisture allows the conduction of electrons with the resultant electrochemical process leading to visible oxidation of metal parts (rust).

How do VCI packaging materials help prevent corrosion?

Volatile Corrosion Inhibiting (VCI) packaging materials contain proprietary chemical formulations that release and invisible, odourless and non-toxic corrosion inhibiting vapour. These resulting vapour molecules settle on exposed metal surfaces (in an enclosure) and interrupt the electrochemical corrosion process.

The application of VCI packaging.

Metal parts are placed into the most suitable form of protective VCI packaging and sealed. Within a time frame of 2 to 3 hours the interior air space of the packaging becomes saturated with vapour molecules containing the corrosion inhibitor. A layer of these corrosion inhibiting molecules will form on all the exposed metal surfaces offering them powerful protection. Once the metal part is then removed from the packaging the molecular layer will vaporise harmlessly into the atmosphere. Left behind will be a clean, dry and corrosion free metal part.

Our products are suitable for Ferrous Materials (Iron, steel, cast iron).
